Let's begin our discussion with Manufacturing Process Management definition (MPM). MPM is a combination of technologies and methods related to how products are to be manufactured. MPM is employed to plan the ordering of materials and other resources, lay down manufacturing schedules, and compile cost data. Another product management system that aims to organize and channelize the work in a proper manner is Master Data Management (MDM). The Master Data Management definition is simply this: the set of practices, processes and enabling technologies to build a single, accurate and authoritative view of information, without forcing every department, business unit and external party to use the same application or format.MDM is not an out-of-the-box product and is an amalgamation of tools, technologies, processes and authority. It allows the organizations to assimilate, manage and publish key information on merchandise, clients and other core business entities as per industry standards. MDM employs processes like identification, data transformation, data collection, normalization, rule administration, error detection and correction, data consolidation, distribution, data storage anddata governance.
The most common MDM implementation is MDM for Product Data, also commonly referred to as Product Information Management (PIM), which represents the processes and technologies focused on centrally managing information about products, with a focus on gathering information and digital assets (images and documentation) from suppliers, in order to market, sell, and support the products through one or more distribution channels. A few PIM systems are open source, but this is not a common requirement.
A key requirement of any solid Master Data Management for Products and Product Information Management software package is a certified set of tools to support GS1 and its member organizations scattered in more than 100 countries. GS1 is the official source of barcode numbers. This global organization issues a GS1 code to all products. Product manufacturers must apply to GS1 for a barcode number for its products. GS1 then provides the official bar code numbers to that organization for a nominal cost. A GS1 code makes a product recognizable in the supply chain, and is therefore used by every industrial sector such as manufacturing, retail, and healthcare. GS1 Data Matrix codes are used on products that have restricted space for product marking such as in healthcare. The GS1 Data Matrix offers detailed information compared to traditional 1D barcodes. GTIN GS1in the identification of any item that is traded, priced, ordered, and invoiced, providing a solution to the worldwide supply chain. Additionally, GLN GS1in the identification of legal entities and physical locations.
